Praetorian palace

The Praetorian Palace is Koper's most important palace. It overlooks the central square and recounts the town's history through its inscribed stones, coats of arms and other carved details.

The Palace was restored in May 2001 and the local town council moved its offices into its new premises. The square has retained its original structure, which is rather typical of the cities in the Mediterranean area. In Koper, the square is closed on all sides and is like a comfortable sitting room, right in the centre of the town.

The tower in Tito's Square was originally a simple Roman fortress. It was transformed into a bell tower at some time between the 15 th and 17 th century and is now used as a sea viewing point.

Socerb

Socerb is located near Koper. The village and town stand in a unique location, on the edge of the Karst, it offers wonderful views over the Slovenian part of Istria, the coastal town and the whole of the Gulf of Trieste. It is also home to a very good restaurant.

Hrastovlje

The village of Hrastovlje owes its name to the many oak trees that used to grow in the area. The village is famous for its small, early 12 th century, Romanesque Church of the Holy Trinity, which is one of the most beautiful cultural monuments in the region. It is surrounded by a wall and two defence towers dating back to the late 16 th century. The church interior is decorated with frescoes, covering all the stone walls. The paintings date back to 1490 and depict scenes from the Old and New testaments. The most famous fresco is the Dance of the Dead.
